Food Sovereignty.

Sarah Wentzel-Fisher discusses how we can make our communities more prosperous, sustainable, and resilient by adopting regenerative agriculture practices; she explains the holistic approaches associated with regenerative agriculture, and emphasizing their social, economic, and ecological dimensions. She also discusses the importance of food sovereignty, provides an overview of the Carbon Ranch Initiative, and brings attention to the many issues farmers face today.

● Food is a really important form of community expression; producing and consuming food are cultural practices that can bring communities together.

● Food sovereignty is a community’s ability to feed itself and potentially produce enough surplus for trade with other communities.

● Agricultural workers were historically a larger workforce than everyone else combined; they now make up less than 1% of the U.S. population, and over half are more than 60 years old.

● Opportunities exist for community-driven agricultural initiatives; everyone can contribute to food production, even in small ways.

● Pathways to Education aims to change the narratives around individuals and communities, especially those affected by generational poverty.

● The Pathways program is based on four pillars: academic support, social support, financial support, and one-to-one mentoring.

● The program serves about 8,500 students across Canada, providing high-touch support and journeying with them throughout high school.

● Asking for help and seeking human connection are important for empowerment and making a difference. Owen calls on people to serve others and achieve personal greatness through compassion.
