12:00pm Performance: Hillsdale High School Jazz Ensemble
The Hillsdale HS Jazz Ensemble is an award-winning ensemble based in San Mateo, CA. The Jazz Ensemble rehearses 0 period (before school) throughout the week and is filled with students from all different backgrounds and abilities and has always been a staple of Hillsdale High School. Throughout the last decade, the Jazz Ensemble has received Unanimous Superior ratings at CMEA and Campana Jazz Festivals, 2nd and 3rd place finishes at Campana and Sonoma State Jazz Festival, and recently was the recipient of the Instrumental Sweepstakes Award at Heritage Festival in Anaheim, CA, as they were the top scoring band of 17 schools in attendance. The Music Department of Hillsdale HS was also the recipient of the Overall Sweepstakes Award, as Hillsdale HS Music was the highest scoring department of 17 schools, representing at least two different disciplines.
1:00pm Performance: The Carlmont High School Jazz Band
For over six decades, the Carlmont High School Jazz Ensemble has been a place where young jazz talent is born. Established in 1963, this illustrious ensemble boasts a deep library with well over 1,000 charts, ensuring every performance is a journey through the rich history of jazz. At the helm is Carlmont's Music Director, Brian Switzer.
2:00pm Performance: Oaktown Jazz Workshops' Youth Mentors
The Oaktown Jazz Workshop has served as a creative and safe space for nurturing, connecting, and elevating the next generation of professional musicians, music educators, and culture bearers. Dedicated to the preservation of jazz music through youth educational programs and performances, the OJW has been providing opportunities since 1994 to emerging students and alumni. Their intergenerational community of teachers and mentors challenge youth from all backgrounds to discover their own distinct talents and develop skills like self-discipline, the ability to collaborate, and the courage to perform. Alumni include the celebrated Ambrose Akinmuserie, Ruthie Price, Dayna Stephens and Jessie Levit among many others.
3:00pm Performance: San Francisco Conservatory of Music
The Roots, Jazz and American Music Program (RJAM) at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music is a one-of-a-kind undergraduate degree program utilizing an innovative apprenticeship model to mentor young artists aspiring to professional careers in jazz and commercial music. Under the direction of drummer and SFCM professor Akira Tana, the group includes Tania Cosma - drums, Carlo Rabano - trombone, Kira Agrell - alto saxophone and bass clarinet, Sean Walters McDonald - bass and Tania Cosma on drums.
