JAM Mention: Sistering

KCSM Jazz Appreciation Event Performances

2026 has started out with a plethora of great new jazz releases but there is none more unique than the collaboration of four dynamic and acclaimed vocalists known as “The Sistering.” Comprised of Lenora Zenzalai Helm, Lois Deloatch, Kate McGarry, and Nenna Freelon, the release of their debut collaboration speaks to a deeply personal relationship with songs that implore passion and power. Thank You Jesse "Chuy" Varela

Released in March, they made their debut at Carnegie Hall on April 1 to rousing acclaim. The intricate harmonies and distinctive individual styles give pieces like “Combat Boots and Glass Slippers” and the standard, “It Had To Be You,” a resonate glow of purpose and insightful pride as female artists. But imagine my surprise when I received a beautiful video thank you from The Sistering for playing their music on KCSM JAZZ 91. It isn’t just me who has given them spins on JAZZ 91 but as music director for 25 years this is first to receive such a wonderful appreciation for sharing music by such gifted artists with the hippest listeners in the world. Thank you Sisters for thinking of us and we thank you for one of the most memorable recordings thus far for 2026. It's a great musical bouquet for Jazz Appreciation Month!
