Nathan Oliveira (2009)
Oakland-born Nathan Oliveira is a world-famous painter, print-maker and sculptor. He is considered one of the pioneers of the return to figure-painting which originated in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1950s, although he stubbornly went his own way and has followed it for over half a century. He became a Guggenheim fellow, is a veteran of a hundred or more solo and group shows, and has received too many distinguished awards to list.

Nathan taught painting for many years in Oakland and at Stanford University, from which latter position he retired a decade or so ago.

Nathan is also a musician, having taken up trumpet at an early age. Perhaps it was this background which led him to host many musicians at his studios at Stanford, such as Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Dizzy Gillespie, and André Previn, many of whom became his close friends. The musical vibe chez Oliveira must have been strong, because his son, Joe, became a jazz saxophonist good enough to perform live with Getz.

Nathan's art, like the music he loves, reflects a deep sensuality and emotion in motion and space.
