| Walter Savage (2009) | |
|---|---|
| Walter Savage is a bassist, pianist and singer who has had a love affair with jazz and the Bay Area for many years. It's only two years ago that he moved to Arkansas (but he can say "Fayetteville" like a native), and he makes it a point to return every summer for music and memories.
Walter grew up in Watts, and when playing gigs - be it at Yoshi's, or Enrico's or The Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society - the bandstand always lights up for anyone lucky enough to be within earshot. His father was a preacher, and the church influence was strong: Walter says that he can't remember not singing ("Everyone in my family loved to sing", he says.) Stationed throughout the Pacific during the 1960s, a friend showed him a few bass chords, and that's when he know that this just might be his instrument. Early on, he took some lessons down in the LA area with Al McKibbon and Leroy Vinegar. 40 years later, he says he's still finding new things to do with the instrument. Walter has two albums under his own name, "Soothes the Savage Beast" and "Autumn's Witch", the latter featuring his own writing. Has a knack with a melody, and is a good teacher himself (some of McKibbon and Vinnegar must have rubbed off). |
