Mads Tolling (2009)
Notwithstanding his youth—still under 30 years old—Danish-born violinist Mads Tolling has not just one Grammy under his belt, but two. After growing up in Copenhagen, he came to the US at 20 to pursue jazz studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Berklee evidently suited him: not only did he graduate summa cum laude, but fellow-violinist Jean-Luc Ponty recommended him to bassist Stanley Clarke, who called him “the most exciting musician I’ve come across in the past ten years”. Mads joined Stanley’s band, and toured the world.

Later, while enrolled at the Thelonious Monk Institute, Mads was recruited by the Turtle Island Quartet, with whom he’s won both his Grammys. Now a Bay Area resident, he leads an eclectic and creative quartet, which will be making another recording in the summer of 2009.
