(Photograph taken by Lourdes Delgado) | Growing up in Santa Cruz, California, Jeff Ballard listened the LPs his father played: Basie, Ella, Oscar. Fascinated by the brushes of Ed Thigpen of the Peterson trio, it was only natural that he would try out the drums. But it's talent and hard study that's kept him with that instrument.
After three years with the band of Ray Charles, where he realized that the "drum chair was the best seat in the house", it was time for Jeff to make his move to New York City, where he first became part of a group of like-minded musicians such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Turner, Brad Mehldau, Avishai Cohen, Guillermo Klein, Larry Grenadier and Ben Allison. He also played with the masters of prior generations, such as Eddie Harris, Bobby Hutcherson, Buddy Montgomery and Lou Donaldson. Of late he's been part of various projects with Chick Corea and is currently a member of the Brad Mehldau Trio and Joshua Redman’s Elastic Band, and is a co-leader of the collective trio with Mark Turner and fellow-Melhdauian Larry Grenadier. |
