| Lee Bloom (2008) | |
|---|---|
| Born in Columbus, Ohio, Lee Bloom exchanged a secure day job as an award-winning licensed architect in San Francisco for the less-than-secure life of a jazz piano player. But talent will win out, and in the intervening years Lee has made a name for himself as one of the Bay Area's most tasteful
accompanists for vocalists and instrumentalists alike. At the time of his “Desert Island Jazz” experience, he accompanies and arranges for vocalist Jonathan Poretz, and is a member of Palindrome and, notably the quartet led by the great Hal Stein, for whose excellent and recent “Spirit” recording Lee was both pianist and producer. While jazz is the core of his life, Lee's musicianship and interests are far from one-dimensional: as a pianist, he contributed to the forthcoming tribute recording to bluegrass icon Hazel Dickens, accompanying vocalists Elvis Costello, Rosanne Cash and Madeleine Peyroux; and as a session player, he has contributed to a variety of recording projects ranging from straight-ahead jazz, of course, to folk, funk, heavy metal and even country & western. He also writes, not just music, but words: he has had his writings on jazz published as a contributor to the All Music Guide to Jazz, 3rd edition, and his work can also be found online at Allmusic.com and Getmusic.com. |
